ExxonMobil Credit Card: Is It Worth Getting?

$

0

The ExxonMobil Credit Card offers decent rewards for loyal customers, but it's far from being one of the best gas credit card. Those with good-to-excellent credit can qualify for cards that provide significantly more cash back rewards at the pump, like the BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card. You should also note that the ExxonMobil card isn't part of any card network, which means you can't use it outside of ExxonMobil stations.

Review: Should You Apply for the ExxonMobil Credit Card?

We recommend getting the ExxonMobil credit card if you frequently fill up at Exxon locations and you can't qualify for any of the better offers. When used at Exxon, the card has an above-average rewards rate of 2.3%. If you have good enough credit-- that is anywhere above 680-- you can try qualifying for a significantly better gas credit card, like the BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card or the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card. These cards can get you 3% and 4%, respectively, on gas purchases. Still, it's worth noting that the Exxon card itself is much better than most cash back cards. The card provides $0.06 off every gallon they buy which, while not the greatest, is nothing to scoff at either.

Bad For…
People who only buy gas at ExxonMobil locationsIndividuals with excellent credit scores
Those with below average creditAnyone looking for a multi-purpose credit card

The biggest gripe we have with the ExxonMobil credit card is that it's not nearly as rewarding as cards from their competitors. The BP Visa Credit Card, for example, gives its cardholders between $0.05 and $0.15 off per gallon. Not to mention the fact that since it's on the Visa network, the BP card can be used wherever you shop. Therefore, even when we compare the Exxon card to other comparable types of credit cards, it fails to impress.

Bottom Line: When you compare the ExxonMobil credit card to the cream of the crop gas cards, it doesn't hold up. However, the card's high rewards rate makes it worth considering, especially if you can't qualify for those better offers.

ExxonMobil Credit Card Benefits & Features

The ExxonMobil credit card provides $0.06 off every gallon you buy at ExxonMobil stations. Given the current average price of gas is around $2.60, this works out to a rewards rate of 2.31% ($0.06 / $2.60). That is a very good rewards rate when compared to other credit cards with no annual fee. Keep in mind, however, that this rewards rate will fluctuate with the cost of gas. The more expensive a gallon of gas is, the lower your rewards rate will be.

  • Usable only at ExxonMobil stations

For a limited time, cardholders also earn 2x Plenti points on their purchases. The offer is set to expire 12/31/2017. Plenti points are a cross-brand reward program that allows you to collect and redeem points with companies like AT&T, Rite Aid, Macy's, Hulu and of course ExxonMobil. Each point is worth about $0.01 when exchanged for merchandise. Therefore, when you combine this with the $0.06 discount you get on every gallon purchase, your net rewards rate comes out to 4.31%, until this promotion expires.

Citi® Identity Theft Solutions

Another interesting benefit to the ExxonMobil credit card is the free subscription to Citi® Identity Theft Solutions. Given the increasing number of data breaches in recent years, identity theft protection is a welcomed feature. In the event you become a victim, Citi will connect you with a dentity Theft Solution Specialist who can:

  • Help you contact TransUnion credit bureau who will review your credit report and apply an extended Fraud Alert
  • Monitor your report, and keep in contact with the status of your case until it's been resolved
  • Advise you on how to file and complete a police report and other government forms

Once you have the card you can contact Citi® Identity Theft Solutions at 1-800-627-3999 if you live in the NY metro area, and 1-800-274-6660 if you live anywhere else.

You should note this benefit is not unique to the ExxonMobil credit card. Most Citi® credit cards come with Citi® Identity Theft Solutions.

ExxonMobil Business Card Option

Those who operate a business may want to apply for the ExxonMobil Business Card instead. It comes with many of the same benefits plus a set of handy features that make it better-suited for business operations. For example, you can limit the card to be used at a single gas station—in case you want to control where your drivers can refuel. You can also download account reports and receive detailed statements that allow you to break down and track each driver's purchases.

How Does The ExxonMobil Credit Card Compare to Other Options?

Whenever reviewing a credit card, we like to see how it performs when compared to other potential options. In this section you can see how the ExxonMobil card does when matched up against other gas cards.

ExxonMobil Credit Card vs BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card

The BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card is an all-around better card than the ExxonMobil credit card. The Bank of America card awards 1% cash back on every purchase, 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 3% on gas for the first $2,500 in combined grocery/wholesale club/gas purchases each quarter. That 3% rewards rate is much better than ExxonMobil's offer. Unless you're fueling up over $2,500 every 3 months, the card's rewards should always beat the Exxon card. Not only that, you can get the 3% cash back at any gas station with the BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card. Therefore, you can shop around for the lowest price station, and still get the 3% back on top of that, thus maximizing your potential savings. If you apply online, there's also a $150 bonus. To qualify, you need to make at least $500 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

Highlights

  • 1% cash back on every purchase, 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 3% on gas for the first $2,500 in combined grocery/wholesale club/gas purchases each quarter
  • $150 cash rewards bonus after making at least $500 in purchases in the first 90 days of your account opening
  • Introductory 0% APR for your first 12 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made within 60 days of opening your account

ExxonMobil Credit Card vs Costco Anywhere Visa® Card

Those who spend at least $3,000 on gas each year, or who are already Costco members, should apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card. The card is only available to those with a membership to Costco. However, even if you don't have it, it may be worth signing up just for its amazing rewards. The card awards 4% cash back on gas worldwide, for the first $7,000 per year. You can also get 3% back at restaurants and on travel purchases. These are some of the highest cash back rewards available across all these categories. If you don't spend that much on gas per year and/or you're not a Costco member, the ExxonMobil card will be the better options.

Highlights

  • 4% cash back on eligible gas worldwide, including gas at Costco, for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter
  • 3% back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases
  • No annual fee, but you need Costco membership to apply
